The American suburban nightmare and the success of Walmart

Unlike the traditional neighborhood model, which evolved organically as a response to human needs, suburban sprawl is an idealized artificial system. Sub urban sprawl is something that we, as Sri Lankans should not be too worried about. In the US, there are a whole bunch of reasons for the rise of the sub urban sprawl. And some sociologists even connect it with racial politics. Shopping centers are considered as one of the five components of sub urban sprawl. In the USA, Wallmart is considered the largest and most powerfull supermarket chain. It has even been called "the most powerful company ever to exist." In simpler terms If Walmart were a country, it would be the world's 26th largest economy.
Walmart runs on a very basic principle, provide people with cheaper goods. How they achieve this is a totally different story. They generate profits through volume rather than through high markup, and they strive to save their operational costs as much as possible. There’s a whole lot to be learned through the walmart operation, on a individual level, a professional level or even at a national level.

Public Service Announcement: Obituary notice of D.M Ocrasy

D. M. Ocrasy – Beloved husband of Empathy, Son of late Justice F. R Dome and late H. Onar, bellowed father of Hope, Faith and L. Berty and brother of late R.V Lucian. Cortege left residence on 26 January 2010. Cremation took place at lake view, Sri Jayewardenepura Kotte.

Ode to Dubai (part II)- The forgotten one's

These are some of the projects that have been scraped due to the economic down turn in dubai. These are the projects that never got the chance to see the light of day in the crazy world of dubai construction.

AL AMEERA TOWER, 61Floors, never built

THE HEXAGON, 62Floors and never built

BURJ AL ARABI, 35Floors, one of the wierdest buildings designed for dubai, and its a good thing that it was never built!

AHMAD ABDULRAHIM AHMAD ALATTAR TOWER, 74Floors never built

PROVIDENCE TOWER, 54Floors but never built

Autopolis, exibition and convention center, never built

Al sharq tower- 100 floors, never built

Maritime Tower, never built

FOUR SEASONS, Hotel (Festival City), never built

Hydropolis: 220 roomed underwater hotel complex, never built

Dubai Land:largest dome in the world, had it been built.

BLUE BAY :Commercial tower which was never built




Lam Tara Towers :The res-com tower will be built on an area of 68,340 sq ft, built up area 2.8 million sq ft. The residential tower will be made up of 70F on top of 10F of parking. There are 405 apartments, and built up space in res tower is 594,800 sq ft. The com tower will be 60F on top of 10F parking. It will have 290 offices and a built up space of 590,000 sq ft. Never Built!

Binary tower : Prime Location, swimming pool, sauna, jacuzzi, gym. Payment details:5% upon booking(non-refundable), 10% signing of contract within 15 days, every 3 months 10%(24months), 5% upon completion, The minium area for each unit is 1279 sqft.Car parking for each 400 sqft. Very huge terrace with 2 side Lake view. Elegant Lobby with high speed Elevators(8 nos) Yet never built
